One of the most wonderful feelings in the world is experiencing parenthood. However, many couples face difficulties getting pregnant naturally owing to many health issues.

No doubt they can adopt a child, but most couples wish to experience the magical journey of giving birth to their child.

Medical science has developed various fertility treatments to assist couples who desire to have their own child. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is one such assisted reproductive technology (ART).

Dr. Hrishikesh Pai, one of the best IVF doctor in India, says that since 1978 when the first IVF baby was born, IVF has become a boon to millions of infertile couples. Newer innovations and techniques have helped increase the success rate of the treatment substantially.

Dr. Hrishikesh Pai is the founder of Bloom IVF, a chain of one of the best IVF centre in India. These ultra-modern IVF centres have top-of-the-line infrastructure and world-class facilities to help you realize your dream of becoming a parent.

If you are having trouble becoming pregnant and fertility drugs or IUI have not worked, IVF may be an alternative. Here are the essential details concerning in vitro fertilization.

What is IVF?

IVF is one of the most opted fertility procedures in which the eggs are fertilized with the sperm outside the body in the laboratory. One or two of those fertilized eggs(embryos)are then transferred into the uterus so that they can implant and result in a pregnancy.

Who can consider IVF?

Dr. Hrishikesh Pai, one of the leading IVF doctors in India, with an experience of over 35 years, recommends this fertility option to:

  • Women whose fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged
  • Women who are suffering from endometriosis, PCOS, or uterine fibroids
  • Women with premature ovarian failure
  • Men with male factor infertility
  • Cancer survivors
  • Couples who want to avoid passing on a genetic disorder to their child
  • Women with recurrent miscarriages
  • Couples with unexplained infertility
  • Women with diminished ovarian reserve
  • Women with advanced reproductive age

What is the procedure for IVF?

Step 1: Ovarian hyperstimulation

The IVF specialist will give you injectable hormone medications for 8 to 12 days to help your body produce multiple eggs. Throughout this process, you will have to visit the clinic several times for blood tests and ultrasounds so that the doctor can monitor follicle development and growth.

Step 2: Egg retrieval

It is an outpatient procedure wherein the fertility specialist will collect the eggs from your ovaries with the help of a transvaginal ultrasound probe and hollow needle.

It is a painless procedure, but the doctors prefer giving mild sedation to help with discomfort. It takes around 30 minutes to complete this procedure, and then you can return home.

Step 3: Sperm preparation

On the day of your egg retrieval, your spouse will have to give a sample of semen. Some patients may also use a sperm donor as an alternative.

In some circumstances, sperm is removed surgically from the testis using TESE, TESA, or Micro TESE procedure. Following the collection of the semen, the sperm and seminal fluid are separated using the sperm-washing process.

Step 4: Fertilization

The fertilization is done on the same day as the egg retrieval process. The IVF doctor may use any one of the techniques for fertilization:

  • Conventional IVF – During this process, the eggs are placed in the petri-dish with the sperms, and fertilization takes place naturally.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection – In this process, the sperm is injected directly into each egg. This method is used in case of male factor infertility or if the prior IVF cycles have failed.

After fertilization, the embryos are incubated and allowed to develop in the lab for 3 to 5 days. During this period, they are constantly monitored by the embryologist.

Step 5: Embryo transfer

After the egg retrieval, the embryo transfer usually happens three to five days later. The embryo is transferred to the uterus using a thin catheter via the vagina. It is a relatively painless process.

The remaining embryos can be cryopreserved for future use.

Step 6: Pregnancy test

You will undergo a pregnancy test twelve to fourteen days after embryo transfer.
