What are the causes of infertility in women?

  • Age: For females, age is the most commonly associated cause of infertility. As women age, their fertility declines. This is due to the ovaries becoming less efficient.
  • Endometriosis: It is a disease characterized by the development of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus, causing pain and infertility. Endometriosis causes inflammation that makes the uterus inhospitable and it can damage the embryo. It can also block the fallopian tubes or sperm migration.
  • Damage to the fallopian tubes: Fallopian tubes carry eggs from your ovaries to the uterus. They can get damaged due to scars that are formed after pelvic infections, endometriosis, and pelvic surgery. This inhibits the sperm from reaching an egg in the tube where the egg is fertilized and one can only conceive through female infertility treatment in India.
  • Hormonal problems: You may not conceive if there is a problem in the usual hormonal changes in your body that lead to the release of an egg from the ovary and the thickening of the uterus’s lining.
  • Cervical issues: It prevents sperm from passing through the cervical canal.
  • Uterine trouble: Having polyps and fibroids can interfere with getting pregnant. Polyps occur when many cells develop in the lining of the uterus, whereas fibroids grow in the uterus wall.

How is infertility diagnosed in women?

Potential female infertility is assessed through a physical exam which include a medical history regarding potential factors that could contribute to infertility.

What is the treatment of female infertility?

After a complete evaluation, Dr. Hrishikesh Pai will recommend any one of the following infertility treatment for female in India:

  1. Laparoscopy: We will reconstruct your reproductive organs if there is a tubal or pelvic disease. With the help of a laparoscope, we will get rid of scar tissue, treat endometriosis, open blocked tubes, or remove ovarian cysts.
  2. Hysteroscopy: During this procedure, we use hysteroscopy to remove fibroids and polyps, divide scar tissue, and open up blocked tubes.
  3. Intrauterine insemination (IUI): For this procedure, we place the washed semen into the uterus when you are ovulating. Sometimes, you will have to take medications that trigger the release of the egg.
  4. In vitro fertilization (IVF): In IVF, your eggs are fertilized outside your body and then placed inside your uterus. You will have to take medications that will trigger the development of more eggs. When the eggs are mature, we will collect them with a needle. Your partner will give a sample of sperm, which will be added to the eggs in the dish. After the fertilization of the eggs, the resulting embryos will be transferred into your uterus. Extra embryos can be frozen and saved for later use. IVF is one of the most preferred female infertility treatment in India.
  5. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI): ICSI is an advanced IVF method where we inject a sperm directly into the egg and then place the fertilized egg (embryo) into your uterus.
  6. Gamete intrafallopian tube transfer (GIFT) and zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT): Even these procedures involve retrieving an egg, combining it with sperm, and then transferring it back to your body. In GIFT, the eggs are placed along with the sperm into a catheter and are then injected into the fallopian tubes with laparoscopy. Whereas, in ZIFT, we place the fertilized eggs into your fallopian tubes within 24 hours.
  7. Egg donation: You can use a donor’s egg to conceive if you have issues with your ovaries.
