Dr. Hrishikesh Pai will advise you on whether or not PICSI is suitable for you. Using sperm picked this way carries no additional concerns.
First, the sperm is deposited in a PICSI dish with hyaluronan hydrogel samples. All human cells, including the oocyte’s gel layer, contain hyaluronan, a naturally occurring biopolymer.
Only biochemically mature sperm can bind to the hydrogel, which separates them for use by the embryologist in the following step. This procedure replicates a vital phase in natural fertilization, the binding of mature sperm to the egg complex that allows only competent and developed sperm to be used in fertilization.
Due to this, the mature sperm chosen is virtually identical to the sperm that would successfully fertilize an egg in the body. Utilizing this sperm in the fertility procedures minimizes the minor variations between IVF and the normal reproductive process, allowing only the most mature and potent sperm to be selected.
The embryologist will then inject mature sperm into mature eggs. Following PICSI, the injected eggs are incubated overnight and checked for signs of fertilization the following day. The remaining of the procedure is similar to standard IVF and ICSI.
